jeff cox, a classmate of the president, here is a quote, jeff cox talking, had the ability to project cool, it seemed to me, calm, almost nonchalant, part of the image, not just of him but generally in hawaii where in my mind there was some line between sophisticated the attachment and slacker or lazy, very exuded sophisticated detachments, he has his act together, understood how things worked all little better than the rest of us. >> host: 16 years old jeff cox is talking about his classmates, seeing characteristics of his presidency, that has not changed that much. the reason for that detachment, has to do with hawaii. there is that native hawaiian thing, no matter what else is going on, keep cool here. that is sort of the sensibility barry and his buddies who had his buddies what they call the true game which basically is basketball and smoking dope. just be cool. that is part of hawaii, part of barry's formative years and he has always had that nature. another aspect is more developed and related to politics which is in this country and all that racial dynamics and explosiveness,

my successor, senator-elect jeff flake s a good and honorable public servant who will work hard on behalf of our great state of arizona. and my colleague, john mccain, will continue his long and ted candidated public service -- dedicated public service as well. i appreciate the remarks he delivered here yesterday. i want to say thank you to my colleagues for your friendship. it's been a privilege working with so many of you on both sides of the aisle. tha while it's true that washingtone would benefit from more civility, the farther behind the scenes is an extraordinarily collegial institution, and i will certainly miss that aspect i alsoi want to thank my staff, past and present, for working so many long hours and for spending so much time analyzing thessue issues that will determine america's future.ermineur mr.e. president, a farewell speh is often the opportunity to reminisce about the past. i actually don't believe that would be the best use or either your time or mine.. instead, i'm going to comment on some of the biggest public policy changes america faces and recommend principles

jeff cox was a classmate of the president at the high school. he said that iraq had the ability to project cool. almost a nonchalant way. it was all part of the image thing, not just of him, but generally in hawaii, where in my mind there was some kind of line between sophisticated detachment and just slacker lately. and he exuded the sophisticated detachment. he has his act together in a way. he understood how things work, maybe a little better than the rest of us. >> guest: you know, that was when he was 15 or 16 years old. and you can see some of those characteristics today in his presidency. there are a lot of reasons for that detachment. part of it has to do with hawaii. he was a native hawaiian and you just keep cool. no matter what else is going on. he had not come ridership with his buddies. best of all, you know, just being cool. it was part of his formative years. he has always had that nature. another aspect is more developed and related, i would say, or politics, which is in this country and all of its racial dynamics and explosivene
